Makerspace Manual

HP DesignJet T-520

""

The maximum width of the print depends on the size of the roll of paper we use (36" or 24"). Any print whose image-dimensions are less that the width of our roll will require significant trimming.

If it needs to be added to a computer, it's location on our network is \\onyx2 and is named LibMaker T520 however; it's preferred that a Makerspace employee be the one to actually send a print to the device.

Troubleshooting

If the HP DesignJet goes unused for too long a bit of ink may bleed onto the paper or humidity may cause the paper to warp slightly.

The fix for this is to

  1. Power on the printer
  2. Open up the settings on the printer's touch screen (not the PCs)
  3. Select Form feed & cut

This will snip off about five inches of paper from the roll.

Checking image dimensions

The resolution (e.g. 24" x 36") should be defined within the file or we risk the image auto-resizing to the wrong proportions. To do this open the document in an image-editing program (e.g. mspaint, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat) and change the dimensions there.

One easy way to check the dimensions of an image is to open it up in Microsoft Paint and select File > Properties. The window that pops up will provide you with the image's dimensions in inches.

Colors not coming out right (e.g. The UHV red looks orange)

We found that UHV Red often comes out orange when printed using the HP DesignJet and found that if we changed the  Output quality to "High Quality", that fixed the issue.

To change the quality

  1. Open the image in Microsoft's default "Photos" App
  2. Select the "Print" icon
  3. Change Paper Size to a dimension that will accommodate the size of the print (e.g. D size sheet)
  4. Change Paper Type to HP Coated Paper
  5. Select "more settings"
  6. Change Output quality to "High Quality"
